Jean stared down at Alex, fascinated. The night was still dark, and yet his mate - former mate, really - was collapsed in one of their chairs, for all the world asleep. Well, asleep except for one tiny detail...her eyes were wide open, glassy and fixed on the ceiling. There was a triumphant smile on her lips, and yet he strongly doubted that this was her moment of triumph. Anna had told him that she had something to show him, and did she ever.
"She appears to be in some form of torpor," he observed, "Did you do this?"
Naturally, she had done it. Anna would not have known to show him, for one, and since she had begun to discard some of the meekness she'd affected to cause both Alex and himself to underestimate her, she had become more bold in demonstrating her accomplishments. After all, she sought his approval, and she wished to be higher in his estimation than Alex. She had taken Alex's place as his mate, not that Alex realized it yet, but Alex still existed, so there was still some sense of competition.
But, depending on Anna's goal this evening, he suspected that competition might be coming to a close. Was she to prove the stronger childe and the better mate after all? What an accomplishment, given Alex as her rival!
"What do you seek to achieve?" As though he doesn't know. But her voicing the answers to his questions is important. Anna is about to test his bond to her by asking him to assist in breaking his bond to Alex in the most permanent way possible.
